The 130-acre (53 ha) zoo is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, a snake park, and a zoo, and includes the 42-acre (17 ha) Katraj Lake.In 1953 the Pune Municipal Corporation created Peshwe Park on about 7 acres (2.8 ha) where Madhavrao Peshwe had established a private menagerie in 1770. Located in the heart of the city at the base of Parvati Hill, this zoo exhibited animals in traditional cages.

The park is the most visited picnic spot in Patna, with more than 36,000 visitors on New Year's Day in 2011 alone.

The park was first established in 1969 as a botanical garden. The then Governor of Bihar, Mr. Nityanand Kanungo, provided about 34 acres (14 hectares) of land from the Governor's House complex for the garden. In 1972, Public Works added 58.2 acres (23.6 ha) to it, and the Revenue Department transferred 60.75 acres (24.58 ha) to the Forest Department to help expand the park.
